What is BS EN 13302 - Determination of dynamic viscosity of bituminous binder about?

BS EN 13302 is the European standard on bitumen and bituminous binders used in building construction that describes the dynamic viscosity of bituminous binders.

BS EN 13302 specifies a method for the determination of the dynamic viscosity of a variety of bituminous binders: modified and unmodified bituminous binders, bituminous emulsions, cut-back and fluxed bituminous binders, by means of a rotating spindle apparatus (a coaxial viscometer).

Standard application temperatures are quoted, although the dynamic viscosity can be measured at other temperatures if required. Similarly, measurements at standard values of shear rate can be replaced or complemented by measurements at additional shear rates if required.

Who is BS EN 13302 - Determination of dynamic viscosity of bituminous binder for?

BS EN 13302 on bituminous binder is useful for:

  • Builders
  • Civil engineers
  • Manufacturers of bituminous materials and other petroleum products
  • Manufacturers and suppliers of viscometers

Why should you use BS EN 13302 - Determination of dynamic viscosity of bituminous binder

The bituminous binder is a material used to hold solid particles together, for example, bitumen or tar that is most widely used construction material.

BS EN 13302 provides the requirements on apparatus to test bituminous binders that include rotating spindle viscometer, appropriate spindle(s), sample container and temperature control device. BS EN 13302 navigates you through the sampling and test procedure to determine the dynamic viscosity of bituminous binders (unmodified and modified), bituminous emulsions and cut-back and fluxed bituminous binders. BS EN 13302 specifies how to express the results of dynamic viscosity of bituminous binders obtained by test methods.

Overall, BS EN 13302 assist you in manufacturing a well-tested bituminous binder. BS EN 13302 guides you in determining the viscosity to ensure the quality of the bitumen used as a binder by giving a measure of fluidity at a particular temperature. In this way, you can utilise a bituminous binder for your building ensuring the performance parameters such as the adhesion, rheology, durability and application temperatures of bitumen.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 13302:2018 supersedes BS EN 13302:2010. BS EN 13302:2018 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 13302:2010. These include:

  • Clarification of the test sample preparation procedure in the case of cut-back and fluxed bituminous binders
  • Details on how to determine viscosity in relation to shear the rate for non-Newtonian bituminous emulsions and cut-back and fluxed bituminous binders are converted into a more general note
  • More consistent description and use of radius R1 and R2
  • The possibility to use a DSR apparatus has been introduced.
