What is BS EN 13075-2 - Fines mixing time of diluted cationic bituminous emulsions about?

BS EN 13075 is a series of the European standard on bitumen and bituminous binders used in the building construction, maintenance and repair to ensure structural stability and durability.

BS EN 13075-2 is the second part of the BS EN 13075 series of documents that specifies a method for the determination of the fines mixing time of diluted cationic bituminous emulsions, under standardized conditions.

Who is BS EN 13075-2 - Fines mixing time of diluted cationic bituminous emulsions for?

BS EN 13075-2 on bitumen and bituminous binders is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of bituminous materials

Why should you use BS EN 13075-2 - Fines mixing time of diluted cationic bituminous emulsions

Fines mixing time is the time in seconds for the mixability of a mixture of mineral filler and bitumen emulsion without a noticeable breaking effect.

BS EN 13075-2 specifies the characteristics of the reference fillers

BS EN 13075-2 provides the apparatus requirements and reagents of recognized analytical grade and water to test reference fillers of diluted cationic bituminous emulsions.

BS EN 13075-2 navigates you through the sampling and test procedure of test specimen under normal laboratory conditions to measure the time until the emulsion breaks.

Expression of results and test report of the individual mixing time values can be determined by BS EN 13075-2.

Furthermore, BS EN 13075-2 guides you through the manufacturing of bituminous emulsions by identifying its breaking behaviour, which allows for the dispersion of the bitumen while assuring the emulsion's stability and adhesion with aggregates at room temperature.

In this manner, a bituminous emulsion can be used to provide a good-looking, waterproof, and long-lasting finish that is suitable for patching, repairs, and preventative maintenance ensuring ductility or brittleness, by considering the fracture work and the deformation energy parameters.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 13075-2:2016 supersedes BS EN 13075-2:2009. BS EN 13075-2:2016 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 13075-2:2009. These include:

  • Three reference fillers (Forshammer, Sikaisol and Caolin Q92) may be used
  • The conical-shaped funnel is no longer required as filler is to be directly added via a spoon from a simple ad hoc container
  • Since no supporting evidence for the values previously stated in the 2009 version could be found, repeatability and reproducibility figures are withdrawn
  • More complete (e.g., particle size distribution envelopes) and more homogeneous description of the three reference fillers.
