What is BS EN 13614 about?

BS EN 13614 specifies a method for determining the adhesion of a bituminous emulsion coated onto aggregate when immersed in water. The method considers two different aspects of adhesivity, i.e. immediate adhesivity and water effect on binder adhesion.

The method may be used with a reference aggregate. In that case, it measures the intrinsic adhesion behaviour of a bituminous emulsion. The method may also be used with a specific aggregate as used on a job site.

NOTE: BS EN 13614 does not purport to address all of the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this document to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Who is BS EN 13614 for?

BS EN 13614 on adhesion of bituminous emulsion is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of bitumen and binders
  • Construction companies
  • Builders
  • Civil engineers

Why should you use BS EN 13614?

Bitumen emulsion is a liquefied type of bitumen. By dispersing bitumen in water and adding an emulsifier, ordinary bitumen turns into a low viscosity liquid that can easily be used in a variety of applications, including repairing and maintaining roads, waterproofing etc. To resist the action of water from bitumen after coating the aggregate, a qualitative assessment of the binder from a bituminous emulsion is a must. BS EN 13614 determines adhesive behaviour of bituminous emulsion when immersed in water.

BS EN 13614 helps determine the adhesion of bituminous emulsions by immediate adhesivity and water effect tests on binder adhesion which helps in the construction of buildings.

BS EN 13614 allows you to deliver high-quality and durable materials and binding agents that can enhance the service-life of end-product.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 13614:2021 supersedes EN 13614:2011. BS EN 13614:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to EN 13614:2011. These include:

  • Curing and conditioning the coated aggregates within a heat resistant glass dish in the form of a monolayer of materials instead of placing them into a beaker
  • Making the assessment underwater, which can be replaced if dirty, with the help of an appropriate desk lamp
  • No requirements for a specific thermometer since room temperature can be checked with ordinary means. After drying, aggregates are to be left to cool down to room temperature before starting the test procedure
  • Acceptable tolerance on conditioning time is reduced from ± 4 h to ± 2 h
  • Guidance for the marking of covered surface area (Annex A) is improved by complementing the sketches with actual pictures
