What is BS EN IEC 61968‑13 about?
BS EN BS EN IEC 61968 is a series on application integration at electric utilities. Electric utilities are in the business of providing reliable and affordable power to all customers within their service territories and are being driven to do so in a more efficient and environmentally friendlier manner. BS EN IEC 61968‑13 specifies common distribution power system model profiles that can be used to exchange network models in a utility or between a utility and external applications to the utility. BS EN IEC 61968‑13 provides a list of profiles that allow modelling balanced and unbalanced distribution networks in order to conduct network analysis (Power flow calculation).
BS EN IEC 61968‑13 reuses some profiles without any change, or eventually extends them or restricts them. Moreover, it proposes other profiles to reflect distribution needs.
BS EN IEC 61968‑13 includes informative parts, as CIM model extensions, which could be integrated into future versions of the BS EN IEC CIM Model. These extensions have been used by some utilities for utility internal information exchange use cases and to support information exchanges between different market participants like Transmission System Operators (TSO), Distributed System Operators (DSO), Distributed Network Operators (DNO) and Significant Grid Users (SGU) including generators and industry.
Who is BS EN IEC 61968‑13 for?
BS EN IEC 61968‑13 on electric utilities is useful for:
- Administration department
- Telecommunication sector
- IT sector
- Software engineer
- Design engineer
Why should you use BS EN IEC 61968‑13?
Basic system model utilities have been used for decades has been replaced by one utilizing a myriad of technologies that allow increased flow of data, grid control and automation to achieve the utility’s specific goals. BS EN IEC 61968-13 provides you with the format and rules for exchanging modelling information based upon the common distribution power system model and related to distribution network data. The purpose of BS EN IEC 61968-13 is to allow the exchange of instance data in bulk. It can be used for synchronizing geographical information system databases with remote control system databases.
BS EN IEC 61968‑13 provides the information on the Network Model Management that manages power system resources and their electrical properties. The properties are default or calculated values held on power system resources, usually derived from external data sources, such as datasheets of assets coming from either asset catalogues, or from actual assets. Common distribution power system model related profiles can be provided by a GIS system or equivalent to a Network Model Management System.
Implementing BS EN IEC 61968‑13 on application integration at electric utilities specifies the purpose of the common distribution power system as connecting the customer's system to the ground is to limit the voltage that may develop if high voltage conductors fall onto lower-voltage conductors which are usually mounted lower to the ground, or if a failure occurs within a distribution transformer.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN IEC 61968‑13:2021 supersedes BS EN 61968‑13:2008. BS EN IEC 61968‑13:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 61968‑13:2008. These include:
- Alignment with "CIM100" UML version fixed in July 2018: BS EN IEC61970cim17v24_BS EN IEC61968cim13v05_BS EN IEC62325cim03v14.eap
- Test of Data Sets against "CIM100" version given in a).
- Test of Data Sets against a newer "CIM100" version of May 2019: BS EN IEC61970cim17v34_BS EN IEC61968cim13v12_BS EN IEC62325cim03v17a.eap
- Alignment with "CIM100" after CDV stage in order to align 61968-13 with the latest CIM version BS EN IEC61970cim17v38_BS EN IEC61968cim13v12_BS EN IEC62325cim03v17a. A new alignment was done in March/April 2020 on a new CIM100: BS EN IEC61970cim17v38_BS EN IEC62968cim13v13_BS EN IEC62325cim03v17a.eap. This document has been properly updated with the latest developments to minimize the need for any convergence.
- Test of Data Sets was validated against the profiles derived from these two newer versions of CIM100 in order to guarantee consistency. Validation includes syntax validation, and load flow calculation.
