What is BS EN 17462 about?  

BS EN 17462 describes a method for the determination of the massic activity (Bq/kg) of 131I, 134Cs, and 137Cs in animal feeding stuffs in monitoring laboratories. 

BS EN 17462 provides general guidance on the preparation of feed samples and the measurement of the three radionuclides 131I, 134Cs and 137Cs by high resolution gamma-ray spectrometry 

Note: The method was fully statistically tested and evaluated in a collaborative trial comprising five animal feeding stuff samples for the radionuclides 131I, 134Cs and 137Cs. Details on the successfully tested working range for each of the examined radionuclides are described in Annex C.

Why should you use BS EN 17462?  

Radionuclides can contaminate food and can affect health and long-term consumption of radiologically contaminated food can also damage DNA. In the aftermath of nuclear power plant accidents that occurred in the past, it is crucial to standardize measurements of the three most common radioactive contaminants mentioned in BS EN 17462 

The most commonly used method for identification and quantification of these radionuclides in animal feeding stuffs samples is high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry.  

Through BS EN 17462, you will be able to control and minimize the transfer of contaminating radionuclides in animal feeding stuffs. As a result, it could enhance its health and long-term production of food. Moreover, the transfer of these radioactive contamination to animal food products such as milk, eggs and meat, will mitigate potential risks to human health as well.
