What is BS EN 15741 - Animal feed sampling and analysis about?
Organochlorine pesticides are chlorinated hydrocarbons used extensively from the 1940s through the 1960s in agriculture and mosquito control. Representative compounds in this group include DDT, methoxychlor, dieldrin, chlordane, toxaphene, mirex, kepone, lindane, and benzene hexachloride. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is an analytical method that combines the features of gas-chromatography and mass spectrometry to identify different substances within a test sample.
BS EN 15741:2020 specifies a gas chromatographic mass spectrometric (GC-MS) method for the determination of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in compound feeds and feed materials (oils and fats, fish meal).
Who is BS EN 15741 - Animal feed sampling and analysis for?
BS EN 15741 on Animal feed sampling and analysis is useful for:
- Manufacturers of animal feeding stuff
- Product development / innovation / research teams
- Quality control teams
Why should you use BS EN 15741 - Animal feed sampling and analysis?
BS EN 15741 is applicable to compound feeds consisting of less than 20 % water by mass and oil/fatty samples containing residues of one or more of the following OCPs and PCBs and some of their isomers and degradation products:
- Aldrin
- Dieldrin
- Chlordane, as the sum of chlordane isomers and oxychlordane
- Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), as the sum of isomers o,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDT, p,p'-TDE (p,p'-DDD), and p,p'-DDE
- Endosulfan, as the sum of α-/β-isomers and endosulfan-sulphate
- Endrin, as the sum of endrin and delta-keto-endrin
- Heptachlor, as the sum of heptachlor and heptachlor epoxide
- Hexachlorobenzene (HCB)
- Hexachlorocyclohexane isomers α-HCH (α-BHC), β-HCH (β-BHC), γ-HCH (γ-BHC or lindane)
- Photo heptachlor
- Cis- and trans-nonachlor
- Non dioxin-like PCBs (ndl-PCBs), as the sum of PCB 28, 52, 101, 138, 153 and 180.
BS EN 15741 has been fully validated by a collaborative trial for the substances and corresponding ranges. Using BS EN 15741 guidelines you can determine organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in compound feeds and feed materials (oils and fats, fish meal) using gas chromatographic mass spectrometric (GC-MS) method, and provide your customers with safe and reliable products.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN 15741:2020 supersedes BS EN 15741:2009. BS EN 15741:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 15741:2009, which includes:
- Regarding non-dioxin-like PCBs (ndl-PCBs), BS EN 15741:2020 contains two approaches that can be followed. Method 1 concerns the original extraction and clean-up methods of the previous edition of this standard but combined with more sensitive detection approaches. In method 2, the extraction and clean-up methods have been modified in order to increase the test portion. The detection of method 2 concerns the original detection method of the previous edition of this standard
