Why should you use PD CEN/TR 16749 – Aluminium and aluminium alloys?
Aluminium alloys are widely used in engineering structures and components where lightweight or corrosion resistance is required. Alloys composed mostly of aluminium have been very important in aerospace manufacturing since the introduction of metal-skinned aircraft. The die casting process is a casting process in which molten metal is injected under substantial pressure, typically above 70 bars, into a metal die and solidifies under this pressure.
PD CEN/TR 16749 provides you with the classification of defects and imperfections in high pressure, low pressure and gravity die-cast products using a scheme based on three levels:
- Level 1- This is based on morphology/location of defects and imperfections, concerning the investigation techniques suitable for their detection there are internal and external or surface defects and imperfections. Subsurface defects and imperfections are considered surface defects and imperfections. The geometrical defects and imperfections refer to the casting shape in terms of dimensions and tolerances.
- Level 2 – This is mainly focused on the metallurgical, physical, chemical and process-based origin of defects and imperfections. They are grouped in their general metallurgical origin such as defects and imperfections related to the presence of gas, defects and imperfections related to material volume contraction during metal solidification, defects and imperfections related to thermal contraction prevented by previously solidified metal or by the die, defects and imperfections related to incorrect filling of the die-cavity, defects and imperfections related to metal/die interaction and defects and imperfections related to the presence of unsuitable phases.
- Level 3 – This is used to identify the specific types of defects and imperfections. It describes a particular type of defect and imperfection allows a better definition of its metallurgical origin, which was preliminarily identified in the previous level.
