What is BS EN 50398-1- Combined and integrated alarm system about?

BS EN 50398 is a European Standard on alarm systems that contributes to ensuring that the required level of alarm system integrity and performance are met so as to minimize the impact of hazardous events.

BS EN 50398-1 is the first part of the series that specifies the requirements for integrating alarm applications with other systems, which may or may not be alarm applications.

BS EN 50398-1 defines requirements and procedures for essential testing of the specific aspects of the functionality and integrity, related to the integration of the equipment or systems, in order to complement the individual alarm application standards.

Who is BS EN 50398-1- Combined and integrated alarm system for?

BS EN 50398-1 on alarm systems is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers of alarm systems
  • Alarm receiving canters
  • Organization which provides services for alarm systems
  • Product design engineers
  • Quality control and testing authorities
  • Local authorities

Why should you use BS EN 50398-1 - Combined and integrated alarm system?

Integrated alarm systems are systems having one or more common facilities with at least one being an alarm application. However, they require careful consideration of many factors in order for the end result to be fit for purpose.

BS EN 50398-1 describes the general requirements and configuration types for combined and integrated electronic systems, which should apply when one or more of the applications being integrated is an alarm application. Applications that should be integrated have as a prerequisite that they are capable of being interoperable at a specified system, sub system or component level.

BS EN 50398-1 describes the elements that make up the planning, design, installation, commissioning, system verification, handover, and maintenance of an integrated alarm system.

Meeting the requirements set out in BS EN 50398-1 is important from the point of view of maintaining operational efficiency and integrity of the overall alarm system. Incidents of communication failure due to inefficient transmission equipment and poor detection of hazards, can thus be avoided.
