What is this BS EN 12102-2 - Heat pump water heater noise level about?

BS EN 12102 discusses electrically driven compressors. BS EN 12102-2 is the second part of the BS EN 12102 multi-series and discusses heat pump water heaters. BS EN 12102-2 only applies to water heaters which are supplied in a package of heat pumps and storage tanks.

In the case of water heaters consisting of several parts with refrigerant connections, this BS EN 12102-2 applies only to those designed and supplied as a complete package. BS EN 12102-2 specifies the testing procedure to assess the sound power level of the electrically driven compressors and connected to heat pump water heaters and heat pump combination heaters or including a domestic hot water storage tank for domestic hot water production.

Note 1: Testing procedures for simultaneous operation for domestic hot water production and space heating are not treated in this standard. Simultaneous operation means that domestic hot water production and space heating generation occurs at the same time and may interact.

Note 2: For the space heating function, the requirements are given in EN 12102-1:2017.

Note 3: BS EN 12102-2 does not specify requirements for the quality of the used water.

Who is BS EN 12102-2 - Heat pump water heater noise level for?

BS EN 12102-2 on heat pump water heater noise level is useful for:

  • Electric water heater manufacturers
  • Research and development departments
  • Quality control personnel

Why should you use BS EN 12102-2 - Heat pump water heater noise level?

Heat pump water heaters use electricity to move heat from one place to another instead of generating heat directly.  Therefore, they can be two to three times more energy-efficient than conventional electric resistance water heaters. To move the heat, heat pumps work like refrigerators in reverse.

The sound (or noise) that domestic hot water heat pumps produce is a relevant parameter as it influences the options for installation and seasonal efficiency. BS EN 12102-2 provides you with the methods for testing the sound power level of air/water, brine/water, water/water, and direct exchange/water heat pump water heaters and heat pump combination heaters with electrically driven compressors connected to or including a domestic hot water storage tank for domestic hot water production. BS EN 12102-2 helps you to assess the sound of your heat pump water heaters and helps you to maintain the sound level below permissible limits. BS EN 12102-2 helps you to serve your customers by keeping noise levels low, and avoiding the irritation associated with excessive noise.
