What is BS EN 15218 Air conditioners and liquid chilling packages about?

Air conditioners and liquid chillers are machines designed to cool air and/or liquids. Liquid chillers utilize a refrigeration cycle that lets them remove heat from various liquids and release it into the atmosphere.

BS EN 15218 is the European Standard that covers the performance requirements of air conditioners and liquid chilling packages.  The main objective of BS EN 15218 is to provide ratings to air conditioners and liquid chilling packages based on their evaluated performance.

This standard specifies the terms, definitions, test conditions, test methods and requirements for rating the performance of air conditioners and liquid chilling packages, with electrically driven compressors and with evaporatively cooled condensers when used for space cooling.

BS EN 15218 applies to units equipped with a water tank or with a continuous water circuit supply that can also operate without water feeding.  It also applies to factory-made units which can be ducted and it applies to factory-made units of either fixed capacity or variable capacity by any means.

Packaged units, single split, and multi-split systems are covered by BS EN 15218.

BS EN 15218 specifies the conditions for which performance data shall be declared for compliance to the Ecodesign regulation 206/2012 and to the Energy Labelling regulation 626/2011 of air conditioners with evaporatively cooled condenser in cooling mode.

Note 1: BS EN 15218 does not apply to air-to-air and air-to-water air conditioners with a condenser cooled by air and by the evaporation of water condensed on their evaporator.

Note 2: Installations used for industrial processes cooling are not within the scope of this BS EN 15218.

Who is BS EN 15218 - Air conditioners and liquid chilling packages for?

BS EN 15218 on air conditioners and liquid chilling packages  is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers of air conditioners and liquid chilling packages
  • Companies involved with refrigerating technology
  • Product design engineers
  • Quality control and testing personnel
  • Mechanical engineers
  • Maintenance personnel

Why should you use BS EN 15218 - Air conditioners and liquid chilling packages

A variety of air conditioners and liquid chilling packages use evaporatively cooling condensers and electrically driven compressors respectively to provide space cooling. During this course, a huge amount of heat is released outside which can be concerning. Thus, rating these devices gives a shorthand description of the damage they may cause when in use.

For rating these air conditioners and liquid chilling packages, BS EN 15218 provides a classification of these devices.

To facilitate the evaluation of air conditioners and liquid chilling packages, BS EN 15218 provides requirements for the test conditions, and guidelines on the rating capacity test to demonstrate the performance and quality of the products.

As a result, if you are a manufacturer of air conditioners and liquid chilling packages, adopting BS EN 15218 requirements and test methods can help determine whether or not your products are efficient and effective when in use.
