What is ISO 20290‑4 – Aggregates for concrete about?
ISO 20290 is a series of international standards that discusses the test methods for mechanical and physical properties for aggregates for concrete. Concrete aggregates are composed of geological materials such as gravel, sand and crushed rock.
ISO 20290‑4 is the third part of the ISO 20290 series, which gives the test method for the determination of ten percent fines value (TFV) of aggregates. This method gives a relative measure of the resistance of the aggregate crushing under the gradually applied compressive load.
It covers two sets of procedures:
- The first procedure is applicable for aggregates tested in dry condition; and
- The second procedure is applicable for aggregates tested in a soaked condition
NOTE: The method applies to aggregates of different strengths covering both weak and strong aggregates. It is applicable to standards aggregates, i.e., passing a 14,0 mm test sieve and retained on a 10,0 mm test sieve.
Who is ISO 20290‑4 – Aggregates for concrete for?
ISO 20290‑4 on mechanical and physical properties of aggregates for concrete is applicable to:
- Manufacturer of concrete ingredients
- Civil engineers
- Quality testing of concrete
- Suppliers of aggregate materials for concrete
Why should you use ISO 20290‑4 – Aggregates for concrete?
Aggregate materials help to make concrete mixes more compact. They also decrease the consumption of cement and water and contribute to the mechanical strength of the concrete, making them an indispensable ingredient in the construction and maintenance of rigid structures. Concrete aggregates are composed of geological materials such as gravel, sand and crushed rock.
ISO 20290‑4 gives you the guidance where the ten per cent fines value is a measure of the resistance of aggregate crushing subjected to loading and it applies to both weak and strong aggregate. Fine aggregates are defined as those passing 2.36mm sieve.
ISO 20290‑4 provides you with the ten per cent fines value which is widely used to measure the resistance of an aggregate to crushing under compressive load. It is frequently employed in assessing aggregates for highways construction and can be used with rocks of both high and low strength.
As a user of ISO 20290‑4, you can be ensured of mechanical and physical properties of aggregates for concrete.
