What is BS EN 14617-13 - Electrical resistivity of agglomerated stone products about?

BS EN 14617 is a European Standard for testing agglomerated stone products. The main aim of the BS EN 14617 series is to provide manufacturers with best industry practices to ensure the agglomerated stone is fit for its intended use.

BS EN 14617-13 is the 13th part of the BS EN 14617 series that covers the determination of DC insulation resistance, surface resistance and resistivity, and the corresponding electrical conductance and conductivity of specimens of agglomerated stone products conforming to the definition reported in EN 14618.

These products are usually made by stone aggregates bound via either resin and filler or cement and water (paste components) or a mixture of polymer/cement and related addition (such as reinforcing fibres, electrically insulating/conducting fillers, etc.).

Resistivity/conductivity may also be used as an indirect measure of some properties of agglomerated stone products.

Who is BS EN 14617-13 - Electrical resistivity of agglomerated stone products for?

BS EN 14617-13 on agglomerated stone products is useful for:

  • Construction and mineral material and product manufacturers
  • Manufacturers and designers of agglomerated stone products
  • Entities involved with masonry work
  • Engineers
  • Architects
  • Contractors

Why should you use BS EN 14617-13 - Electrical resistivity of agglomerated stone products?

The resistance/conductance of an agglomerated stone specimen is evaluated by the measurement of direct current (DC) flow in the specimen under specified conditions by appropriate electrode systems. The resistivity/conductivity shall be calculated from specimen and electrode dimensions and shapes.

In this regard, BS EN 14617-13 provides the best industry recommendations on product sampling and test specimen preparation and conditioning and includes procedures for testing of agglomerated stone.

The electrode system and measuring equipment specified in BS EN 14617-13 are used for the measurement of surface characteristics of agglomerated stone specimens.

Volume resistance and resistivity test method and the corresponding electrical conductance and conductivity of specimens of agglomerated stone products are also included in BS EN 14617-13.

Thus, if you are a manufacturer of agglomerated stone products, complying with BS EN 14617-13 can help demonstrate the performance and credibility of your product, ensuring that they are fit for purpose.

Overall, measuring the electrical resistivity of agglomerated stone products ensures quality control and product endurance.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 14617-13:2013 supersedes EN 14617-13:2005. BS EN 14617-13:2013 includes the following technical change with respect to EN 14617-13:2005:

  • Clauses 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 have been modified and a new Annex C has been added since the last edition of BS EN 14617-13
