What is BS EN 4688 about?

Epoxy resins are used in automotive coatings. The chemical properties of epoxy include mechanical strength, adhesion to metals, and heat resistance. These properties protect aircraft components from corrosion and other damage.

BS EN 4688 specifies the requirements for a two-component, high corrosion inhibiting epoxy primer for aerospace applications. The epoxy primer coating applies to suitably prepared metallic substrates, chromic acid anodised, or conversion coated aluminium alloys and other suitably prepared corrosion-resistant substrates.

Who is BS EN 4688 for ?

BS EN 4688 on paints and varnishes for aerospace (epoxy primer) is applicable to manufacturers who supply carriers and similar products to the defence sector. BS EN 4688 is useful for:

  • Paint and primer manufacturers
  • Quality control personnel for primers
  • Design engineers for military aircrafts
  • Quality control personnel for military aircrafts
  • Aircraft manufacturers

Why should you use BS EN 4688?

The primer coating is the layer between the substrate and the paint. The chemical properties of epoxy make it an attractive option for being used as a primer. As a paint manufacturer, you would use BS EN 4688 to ensure that the epoxy primers that you are manufacturing, adhere to the specification.

As a manufacturer of metal or fibre-based carriers, you would use BS EN 4688 to check that the epoxy primer you are selecting is the right one for the particular aircraft component. Also, you will be able to demonstrate the reliability of your products, and build trust throughout the aerospace supply chain
