What is BS EN 4476 - Intermediate coat about ?

BS EN 4476 specifies the requirements for an intermediate coat to be applied over a primer for aerospace applications and with a topcoat for aerospace applications on top.

The properties specified in BS EN 4476 are obtained on defined aluminium alloy test pieces prepared in accordance with EN ISO 3837 and EN ISO 3270 and painted with primer. Topcoat is to be applied on an intermediate coat.

The ability of the material to be used for a specific application should be determined by supplementary tests to confirm that the requirements of BS EN 4476 are met.

Who is BS EN 4476 - Intermediate coat for ?

BS EN 4476 on intermediate coat for aerospace applications is useful for:

  • Paint and primer manufacturers
  • Quality control personnel for primers
  • Design engineers for military aircrafts
  • Quality control personnel for military aircrafts
  • Aircraft manufacturers

Why should you use BS EN 4476 - Intermediate coat ?

The intermediate coating to BS EN 4476 incorporated in a paint scheme between primer and topcoat finish will allow selective removal of topcoat finish using a benzyl alcohol-based paint remover.

The paint scheme including this intermediate coating is done on metallic and non-metallic surfaces to provide equivalent protection against corrosion, mechanical damage, and resistance to aircraft fluids. BS EN 4476 helps you in providing these benefits that will improve the production as well as provide safety to aircraft components.

As a paint manufacturer, you can use BS EN 4476 to ensure that the coating that you are manufacturing for aerospace carriers adhere to the specification. The primer should be free of lead and chromate. It needs to cure at room temperature.

As a manufacturer of metal or fibre carriers, you can use BS EN 4476 to understand which coating is suitable for which aircraft component. Also, you will be able to demonstrate the reliability of your products and build trust throughout the aerospace supply chain.
