What is BS EN 2084 – Electrical cables about?

BS EN 2084 is a European Standard that specifies the characteristics, test methods, qualification and acceptance conditions of single and multicore electric cables, without jackets, for general purpose with conductors in copper or copper alloy, intended for installation in aircraft circuits.

The insulation of these cables is designed to withstand aircraft voltages at a frequency not exceeding 2000 Hz. Unless specified by individual product standards the maximum demonstrated a.c. voltage of rating of these cables is 115 V rms (phase to neutral) and 200 V rms (phase to phase).

They are divided into types, the characteristics of which are given in the product standards.

Who is BS EN 2084 – Electrical cables for?

BS EN 2084 on electrical cables (single and multicore) for aerospace applications is applicable to:

  • Aerospace avionic electrical and fibre optic technology
  • Manufacturers of electrical cables
  • Aircraft manufacturers
  • Quality control/testing and compliance personnel for aerospace
  • Design engineers of electrical cables
  • Spacecraft and space products manufacturers
  • Aerospace and defence industries
  • Testing agencies involved in the inspection of spacecraft and aerospace products

Why should you use BS EN 2084 – Electrical cables

Electrical cables of copper alloy are used when higher strengths or improved abrasion and corrosion resistance properties are required.

BS EN 2084 gives best practice guidelines and test methods of copper alloy conductors for aircraft electrical systems.

As a quality control personnel, you can use BS EN 2084 in the testing of thermal endurance and stability, fire, surface, humidity, and overload resistance. Thus, BS EN 2084 can help you in ease of production and guarantees the machining accuracy of the cable.
