What is BS EN 4612-003 - Tin-plated copper cables about ?

BS EN 4612003 is an international standard on tin-plated copper cables.

BS EN 4612003 specifies the characteristics of UV laser printable jacket, tin-plated copper conductor, electrical cables Crosslinked Ethylene Tetra Fluoro Ethylene copolymer (XLETFE) family for use in the onboard electrical systems of aircraft operating at temperatures between 65 °C and 135 °C, operating at voltages not exceeding 600 V rms at sea level, and frequencies not exceeding 2000 Hz. This insulation system has been used in aerospace applications using 115 V (phase-to-neutral) 400 Hz ac and 28 Vdc.

Tin-plating on copper enhances the life of the cable and protects it from corrosion also.

Who is BS EN 4612-003 - Tin-plated copper cables for ?

BS EN 4612003 on tin-plated copper electrical cables (Single extruded wall for open applications) for aerospace applications is applicable to:

  • Manufacturers of tin-plated copper electrical cables
  • Aircraft manufacturers
  • Quality control/testing and compliance personnel for aerospace
  • Spacecraft and space products manufacturers
  • Aerospace and defence industries
  • Testing agencies involved in the inspection of spacecraft and aerospace products

Why should you use BS EN 4612-003 - Tin-plated copper cables

Tin-plated copper wire is primarily used in wastewater treatment facilities, subway systems, and other contaminated environments susceptible to long-term exposure to excess water. The tin coating on the copper protects the wire from corrosion and premature cable failure.

The tin plating on copper gives you the benefits that it is easy to solder, its conductivity is as same as bare copper and it extends the life of the cable. Hence, BS EN 4612003 is essential in getting the detailed specification on tin-plated copper cables.

Also, Crosslinked Ethylene Tetra Fluoro Ethylene copolymer (XLETFE) greatly improves the surface resistance, insulation resistance, fire resistance of the cable, and tensile strength of the whole body of the cable. BS EN 4612003 contains characteristics of tin-plated copper electrical cables (XLETFE) and provides essential guidance on using the electrical systems of aircraft.

As a quality control personnel, you can use BS EN 4612-003 for inspection of surface, fire, humidity, and overload resistance. Thus BS EN 4612-003 can help in ease of production and guarantees the machining accuracy of the cable.
