What is BS EN 3475701- Strippability and adherence of insulation to the conductor about?

BS EN 3475701 specifies methods of measuring the strippability and adherence of the insulation to a conductor of a finished cable. When a particular method is not specified in the detailed product specification, method A shall be used.

Method B is recommended for wires insulated with materials showing a Low adhesion to the conductor due to the poor repeatability of the test Method A with this type of wires. It shall be used together with EN 3475-100.

Who is BS EN 3475701- Strippability and adherence of insulation to the conductor for?

BS EN 3475701 on strippability and adherence of insulation to the conductor is useful for:

  • Aerospace industry
  • Insulation testing agencies
  • Safety regulatory bodies
  • Testing labs

Why should you use BS EN 3475701- Strippability and adherence of insulation to the conductor

The insulator around the conductor prevents electrical energy and signals from escaping to the surrounding. Cable insulation is an important protective material for cable conductors. It is non-conductive, used to resist electrical leakage, prevents cable conductors from contact with other conductors, and protects the conductor from environmental threats such as heat, water, and chemicals.

The goal of test specified in BS EN 3475701 is to determine the degree of difficulty in removing the insulation from the conductor. The insulation should be difficult to remove from the conductor, but it should be possible with the use of a proper insulation removal tool. The force required to remove the insulation from the conductor (i.e. strip) is measured using methods given in  BS EN 3475701. There may be an acceptable range of values depending on the wire/cable specification.

BS EN 3475701 provides guidance  on the preparation of specimens including insulation stripping properties and the adherence of insulation to the conductor. BS EN 3475701 also provides the methods for the stripping capability of the jacket and adherence of the insulation to the conductor.
