What is BS EN 4608‑001 about?
BS EN 4608‑001 is the first part of a multi-series standard that covers the Aerospace series: cables for electrical and fire resistant cables that enhance the performance and safety in electrical and electronic systems in aerospace applications.
BS EN 4608‑001 specifies the required characteristics and test procedures for fire resistant or fireproof electrical cables for use in aircraft electrical systems. They shall be operated at a rated AC voltage of 600 V ac, a frequency of maximum of 2000 Hz and a long-term temperature of up to 260 °C (ambient temperature plus temperatures rise in the conductor).
The cables in BS EN 4608‑001 shall also maintain a specific dielectric strength when they are subjected to a flame of 1100 °C after five (5) minutes (fire resistant) or 15 minutes (fireproof) exposure.
Who is BS EN 4608‑001 for?
BS EN 4608‑001 on aerospace series: Cables applies to:
- Manufacturers of cables for aerospace applications
- Dealers and importers of cables for aerospace applications
- Testing houses for cables
- Safety and quality assurance services
- Electrical engineers and safety personnel
Why should you use BS EN 4608‑001?
Electric cables have widespread applications in aerospace applications such as electrical wire interconnection systems. Different cables have different applications, they can be identified by colours, wire numbers and wire sizes. Choice of the cable has an impact on performance, maintenance and prevention of accidents.
BS EN 4608‑001 provides you guidance on materials and construction of cables that includes materials, assembly, screened cables, colour, required characteristics and test methods that allows you to standardize the production of cables and achieve consistency and performance.
BS EN 4608‑001 provides you guidance on tests for methods, application and requirements that includes coverage, mass, dimensions, voltage proof test, insulation resistance, surface resistance, overload resistance and more, ensuring the operability and longevity of cables.
BS EN 4608‑001 provides you guidance on qualification and acceptance conditions which includes qualified cable sizes, crosstalk, resistance unbalance, structural return loss, unbalance attenuation which enables you to ensure the safety and performance of cables in aerospace applications.
Guidance in BS EN 4608‑001 enables you to develop and assess cables that have electrical and fire resistance that ensure safety and performance in aerospace applications.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN 4608‑001:2019 supersedes BS EN 4608‑001:2006, which is now withdrawn.
