What is BS EN 2826 - Gas components in the smoke from burning of nonmetals in aerospace  about?

Product and component quality is paramount for aerospace vessels. The delivery of high-quality components contributes to the safety of those on board.

BS EN 2826 defines a test method to determine the concentration of certain gas components due to pyrolitic decomposition of solid materials and composite materials under the influence of radiant heat only or with simultaneous flame application.

Note 1: The gas components in the smoke are determined according to the specific environmental and test conditions defined in EN 2824 and BS EN 2826. No studies have been made up to now to determine whether the results can be transferred to different conditions, particularly to actual fire conditions. The inhalatory toxical risk and irritancy affect cannot be assessed by merely measuring the concentration of individual gas components in the smoke.

Note 2: The burning behaviour and consequently the gas components in the smoke of aerospace materials are not only influenced by the type of material but also to a large extent by the configuration, the specific surface and mass, the combination with other materials, the means of joining as well as the processing technique.

Note 3: These influences shall be taken into account in the preparation of tests, the selection of test specimens and the interpretation of test results.

Who is BS EN 2826 - Gas components in the smoke from burning of nonmetals in aerospace  for?

BS EN 2826  on Gas components in the smoke from burning of nonmetals in aerospace  is useful for:

  • The aerospace and defence industry
  • Manufacturers of aerospace equipment and components
  • Vendors / Manufacturers and suppliers of nonmetallic materials for aerospace
  • Purchase divisions / component sourcing personnel
  • Product design engineers
  • Aeronautical engineers

Why should you use BS EN 2826 - Gas components in the smoke from burning of nonmetals in aerospace ?

Although smoke can contain hundreds of different chemicals and fumes, visible smoke is mostly carbon (soot), tar, oils and ash. Smoke occurs when there is incomplete combustion (not enough oxygen to burn the fuel completely). In complete combustion, everything is burned, producing just water and carbon dioxide. When incomplete combustion occurs, not everything is burned. Smoke is a collection of these tiny unburned particles. Each particle is too small to see with your eyes, but when they come together, you see them as smoke. BS EN 2826 provides you with the test method to determine the concentration of certain gas components due to pyrolitic decomposition of solid materials and composite materials under the influence of radiant heat only or with simultaneous flame application for aerospace so that the products are suitable for the required purpose.

The guidelines in BS EN 2826 contribute towards including high-quality components for aerospace that are responsible for the smooth and safe functioning of vessels.
