What is BS EN 13234 - Crack propagation evaluation about?

BS EN 13234 is a European Standard that describes a method for the classification of ceramic matrix composite (CMC) materials. This is concerning their sensitivity to crack propagation using tensile tests on notched specimens with different notch depths.

BS EN 13234 applies to all-ceramic matrix composites with continuous fibre reinforcement, unidirectional (1 D), bidirectional (2 D), and tri-directional (x D, where 2 < x ≤ 3), loaded along one principal axis of reinforcement. For sensitive materials, BS EN 13234 defines a method for determining equivalent fracture toughness.

Who is BS EN 13234 - Crack propagation evaluation for?

BS EN 13234 on crack propagation evaluation is useful for:

  • Entities involved in ceramic research
  • Advanced technical ceramics manufacturers
  • Materials Engineers
  • Electrical and Semiconductor Industries
  • Quality control personnel
  • Regulatory authorities

Why should you use BS EN 13234 - Crack propagation evaluation?

Advanced technical ceramics have properties like hardness, durability resistance to high temperatures and much more. This makes it suitable for several applications. Their mechanical properties have made them high in demand. One of their mechanical properties consists of their resistance to crack. This makes them more long-lasting as compared to their counterparts. Two classes of ceramic matrix composite materials can be distinguished: materials whose strength is sensitive to the presence of notches and materials whose strength is not affected.

BS EN 13234 guidelines are required because of the complexity and the difficulty in the determination of the resistance to crack propagation. Various tests are necessary to be performed and it is essential to have uniformity in the same for testing the performance of advanced technical ceramics efficiently. Complying with BS EN 13234 will ensure efficient testing and evaluation and can also maximize the credibility of advanced technical ceramics.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 13234:2006 supersedes ENV 13234:1998. BS EN 13234:2006 includes some principal changes with respect to ENV 13234:1998. These are in the normative references, as follows:

  • in 6.1, the reference to EN 10002-2 has been replaced by a reference to EN ISO 7500-1
  • in 6.2.1, the reference to WI 136 has been removed
