What is BS EN 6180052‒ Power drive systems about?

BS EN 6180052 is a part of an international product standard that covers adjustable speed electrical power drive systems.

BS EN 6180052 specifies the requirements and recommends the design and development, integration and validation of safety, related to power drive systems (PDS(SR)) in terms of their functional safety considerations.

BS EN 6180052 is applicable where functional safety of a PDS(SR) is claimed and the PDS(SR) is operating mainly in the high demand or continuous mode. It gives safety sub-functions implemented for high demand or continuous mode, that can also be used in low demand mode. It also provides guidance for the estimation of the average probability of dangerous failure on demand (PFDavg) value.

Note: BS EN 6180052 applies to adjustable speed electrical power drive systems covered by the other parts of the IEC 61800 series of standards.

Who is, BS EN 6180052‒ Power drive systems for?

BS EN 6180052 on Power drive systems is useful for the entities dealing with the applications:

  • Production test equipment, test benches
  • Papermaking machines, textile production machines,
  • Rubber industry
  • Plastics process lines
  • Chemicals or metal production companies, rolling-mills
  • Cement crushing machines, cement kilns, mixers, centrifuges, extrusion machines
  • Developers of Power Drive System

Why should you use BS EN 6180052‒ Power drive systems

Power drive systems contain a group of a pump, an electric motor, adjustable speed controls, and sensors, which permits equipment to vary their speed up to meet demand making the pumps more efficient.

BS EN 6180052 sets out a framework for safety-related considerations of PDS(SR)s and introduces requirements for power drive systems as subsystems of a safety-related system. It facilitates the fulfilment of the requirements of electrical, electronic, and programmable electronic (E/E/PE) components of a power drive system (SR) related to the safety performance of safety sub-function(s) of a power drive system.

The users of BS EN 6180052 can indicate the safety performance for their equipment (system integrator, original equipment manufacturer). It helps the users to incorporate a PDS(SR) into a safety-related control system as well as specific sector implementations using the principles given.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 6180052:2017 supersedes BS EN 6180052:2007, which is withdrawn. BS EN 6180052:2017 includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:

  • Rational added in the scope why low demand mode is not covered by this standard
  • Definition added for: “category” and “safety function”, Updated references to IEC 61508 series Ed.2010
  • “Other sub-functions” sorted into “Monitoring sub-functions” and “Output functions”
  • Some design requirements and technical terms added, Updation in Annex A, D, E, F
