What is BS EN 61800-7-203 – Electrical power drive systems about ?

BS EN 61800-7-203 is an international part of the BS EN 61800 series that discusses the interface and use of profiles for power drive systems. A Power Drive Unit is used to convert electrical or hydraulic power into mechanical motion (often rotary) and drive a mechanical actuation system.

BS EN 61800-7-203 specifies profile type 3 for power drive systems (PDS). Profile type 3 can be mapped onto different communication network technologies.

Note: The functions specified in this part of IEC 61800 are not intended to ensure functional safety. This requires additional measures according to the relevant standards, agreements and laws.

Who is BS EN 61800-7-203 – Electrical power drive systems for ?

BS EN 61800-7-203 on power drive systems is applicable to:

  • Manufacturer of frequency drive
  • Manufacturer of the control device
  • Electrical engineer
  • Quality testing personnel

Why should you use BS EN 61800-7-203 – Electrical power drive systems ?

The use of adjustable speed drives on motor-driven systems— “Power Drive Systems” (PDS)— offers significant energy savings potential in commercial and industrial applications. The PROFIdrive profile was generated by the PROFIBUS & PROFINET user organization PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI). It defines a unified device behaviour and access technique to the drive data.

As a user of BS EN 61800-7-203, you can avail PROFIdrive profile. Engineering costs are reduced when planning and implementing plants and systems, as the various drives respond the same way to control instructions. The programming costs are significantly reduced by using standardised program blocks in the open-loop and closed-loop control systems for controlling the drive.

Overall, the drive manufacturers can benefit from the profile definition, development costs are reduced and the implementation of a non-proprietary standardised interface that improves the chances of being successful in the market.

BS EN 61800-7-203 exemplifies the required interfaces and profile type 3 specifications that help you achieve precision in terms of power drive systems.

What’s changed since the last update ?

BS EN 61800-7-203:2016 supersedes BS EN 61800-7-203:2008, which is withdrawn on 12 October 2018. It includes:

  • Minor updates in the Base Mode Parameter Access mechanism
  • Minor updates and simplification in the Application Class 3 state machine definition
