What is BS EN 14257 about?

BS EN 14257 provides methods to determine the tensile strength of lap joints at elevated temperatures for wood adhesives.

BS EN 14257 specifies a method for testing the strength of wood adhesives at 80 °C.

NOTE The procedure described is based on a test developed in Germany known originally as the WATT '91 test. It uses the test piece described in EN 205.

Who is BS EN 14257 for?

BS EN 14257 on adhesives is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers of rubbers and wood adhesives
  • Chemical Engineers
  • Researchers and scientists
  • Any entity responsible for testing wood adhesives

Why should you use BS EN 14257?

The wood adhesives are polymeric materials capable of interacting with wood's surface physically or chemically in a way that transfers stresses between bonded members without causing the adhesive to rupture or tear away.

BS EN 14257 specifies techniques to determine the tensile strength of lap joints, expressed as force and energy, of an adhesive bond between two adherents. The cleavage occurs when a wedge travels at high speed, separating the adherents.

Overall, BS EN 14257 is a comprehensive guide to determine the tensile strength adhesive bonds, so users will gain a comprehensive understanding of the process and the end product will be safer, more durable and more environmentally friendly.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 14257:2019 supersedes BS EN 14257:2006, which is withdrawn and includes:

  • Clause 4 “Principle” revised
  • 5.1 relevant to tensile testing machine revised
  • 6.1 “Preparation of the bonded test pieces”: number of the test pieces modified
  • Clause 7 “Test procedure” revised
  • 9.3 “Preparation of the test pieces and testing procedures” revised
  • 9.4 “Test results” revised
