What is BS EN 13999-4 - Adhesives about?
BS EN 13999-4 specifies a procedure for the determination of volatile isocyanates in the exhaust air of an emission test chamber after application of a low-solvent or solvent-free adhesive as defined in EN 923.
The method described in BS EN 13999-4 is based on chemisorption of volatile isocyanates with 1-(2-methoxyphenyl) piperazine (in the following: 1-2MP) impregnated filters with subsequent desorption and liquid chromatographic analysis.
The method permits measurement of a wide range of organic compounds containing isocyanate functional groups (NCO), including isocyanate monomers. For testing of adhesives emissions mainly toluene diisocyanato (TDI) and methylene bis (4-phenyl isocyanate also known as 4,4-diisocyanato-diphenylmethane or MDI), are of concern.
The method as described in BS EN 13999-4 can be used for other isocyanates too, such as isochrone diisocyanato (IPDI) and 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanato (HDI) - see ISO 16702. Isocyanate oligomers or prepolymers are not volatile enough to be detected in emission test chambers at room Temperature.
Who is BS EN 13999-4 - Adhesives for?
BS EN 13999-4 on Adhesives is useful for:
- Manufacturers of furniture
- Sculptors of timber structures
- Carpenter
- Constructors of wooden houses
- Civil engineers
Why should you use BS EN 13999-4 - Adhesives?
Solvent-free and low-solvent adhesives may release considerable long-term emissions of volatile chemical compounds. Any documentation of emission characteristics requires a test method that includes all relevant and potentially hazardous substances.
BS EN 13999-4 provides methods and procedures for measuring the emission properties of low solvent or solvent free adhesives after its application and determine volatile diisocyanatos.
BS EN 13999-4 provides methods that are essential for ensuring that testing is reliable and reproducible, that results are gained within a short period, and that carcinogenic or sensitizing volatile substances are significantly absent.
Using BS EN 13999-4 you can get help in determining the volatile diisocyanatos. By using BS EN 13999-4 you can manufacture better quality solvent-free adhesives.
