What is BS EN 13999-3 - Adhesives about?

BS EN 13999-3 specifies a procedure for the determination of volatile aldehydes (especially formaldehyde and acetaldehyde) and other carbonyl compounds in the exhaust air of an emission test chamber after application of a low-solvent or solvent-free adhesive as defined in EN 923.

The method described in BS EN 13999-3 is based on chemisorption of volatile carbonyl compounds with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (in the following: DNPH) impregnated silica tubes or cartridges with subsequent solvent desorption, clean-up and liquid chromatographic analysis. The method permits measurement of several aldehydes including formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde, valeraldehyde, is valeraldehyde, hexanal, benzaldehyde, 2,5-dimethylbenzaldehyde, o-tolu aldehyde, m-tolu aldehyde, p-tolu aldehyde, crotonaldehyde in the concentration range of approximately 10 μg/m³ to 1 mg/m³ (see ISO 16000-3).

Who is BS EN 13999-3 - Adhesives for?

BS EN 13999-3 on Adhesives is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of furniture
  • Sculptors of timber structures
  • Carpenter
  • Constructors of wooden houses
  • Civil engineers

Why should you use BS EN 13999-3 - Adhesives?

Solvent-free and low-solvent adhesives may release considerable long-term emissions of volatile chemical compounds. Any documentation of emission characteristics requires a test method that includes all relevant and potentially hazardous substances.

BS EN 13999-3 provides methods and procedures for measuring the emission properties of low solvent or solvent free adhesives after its application and determine volatile aldehydes.

BS EN 13999-3 provides methods that are essential for ensuring that testing is reliable and reproducible, that results are gained within a short period, and that carcinogenic or sensitizing volatile substances are significantly absent.

Using BS EN 13999-3 you can get help in determining the volatile aldehydes. By using BS EN 13999-3 you can manufacture better quality solvent-free adhesives.
