BS EN 301 is an international standard used for phenolic and aminoplastic adhesives. This BS EN 301 specifies the classification and requirements for conducting the test methods. Use BS EN 301 for ensuring the safety of you and your environment.
BS EN 301 establishes a classification method for phenolic and aminoplastic polycondensation adhesives. It also specifies performance requirements for such adhesives for the factory manufacture or factory-like manufacturing conditions of load-bearing timber structures only. Note: The performance requirements of this European Standard apply to the adhesive only, not to the timber structure.
Note: This BS EN 301 does not cover the performance of adhesives for on-site gluing (except for factory-like conditions) nor the production of wood-based panels, except solid wood panels, or modified and stabilized wood with considerably reduced swelling and shrinkage properties, e.g. such as acetylated wood, heat treated wood and polymer impregnated wood.
Note: Adhesives meeting the requirements of BS EN 301 are adequate for use in a load-bearing timber structure, provided that the bonding process has been carried out according to an appropriate product standard.

What’s changed since the last update ?
BS EN 301:2017 supersedes BS EN 301:2013. BS EN 301:2017 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 301:2013. These include:
- EN 15416-2 is replaced by EN 302-8, Adhesives for load-bearing timber structures — Test methods - Part 8: Static load test of multiple bond line specimens in compression shear
- Adhesives tested for working properties according to Clause 6 will be marked with a “w” in the end of their designation code
- Provisions for delamination tests on preservative treated softwood, hardwood and other conifers species
- Provisions for what to test when systems are used with a range of hardener dosage
- Provisions for small modifications of already tested adhesives
- A new Clause 7 – Marking and labelling has been introduced
