BS EN ISO/ASTM 52902 covers the general description of benchmarking test piece geometries along with quantitative and qualitative measurements to be taken on the benchmarking test piece(s) to assess the performance of additive manufacturing (AM) systems. 

This performance assessment can serve the following two purposes: 

  • AM system capability evaluation 
  • AM system calibration 

The benchmarking test piece(s) is (are) primarily used to quantitatively assess the geometric performance of an AM system. BS EN ISO/ASTM 52902 describes a suite of test geometries, each designed to investigate one or more specific performance metrics and several example configurations of these geometries into test piece(s). BS EN ISO/ASTM 52902 prescribes quantities and qualities of the test geometries to be measured but does not dictate specific measurement methods. Various user applications can require various grades of performance. BS EN ISO/ASTM 52902 discusses examples of feature configurations, as well as measurement uncertainty requirements, to demonstrate low and high-grade examination and performance. BS EN ISO/ASTM 52902 does not discuss a specific procedure or machine settings for manufacturing a test piece, which are covered by ASTM F 2971 and other relevant process-specific specifications. 

Note 1: To avoid confusion with the terms “power tool” and “inserted tool”, machine is used for the former throughout this document. 

Note 2: It is not applicable to die grinders or straight grinders.

Why should you use BS EN ISO/ASTM 52902 - Additive manufacturing test artifacts 

BS EN ISO/ASTM 52902 specifies a laboratory method for measuring hand-transmitted vibration emission at the handles of hand-held power-driven angle and vertical grinders. BS EN ISO/ASTM 52902 is a type-test procedure for establishing the magnitude of vibration in the gripping areas of a machine fitted with a specified test wheel and run under no-load conditions. The method has been established for surface grinding tasks only. Cutting and sanding generally create lower vibrations. It is intended that the results be used to compare different models of the same type of machine. 

BS EN ISO/ASTM 52902 is applicable to hand-held machines (see Clause 5), driven pneumatically or by other means, intended for grinding, cutting-off, and rough sanding, with bonded, coated, and super-abrasive products and with wire brushes for use on all kinds of materials. Additive manufacturing has the ability to create parts that cannot be done in traditional methods.
