What is ISO 10140-1 about?
ISO 10140-1 is the first part of multiple series that specifies test requirements for the laboratory measurement of the sound insulation of building elements and products, including detailed requirements for the preparation and mounting of the test elements, and for the operating and test conditions.
ISO 10140-1 also specifies the applicable quantities and provides additional test information for reporting.
The general procedures for airborne and impact sound insulation measurements are given in ISO 10140-2 and ISO 10140-3, respectively.

Why should you use ISO 10140-1?
Sound insulation relates to the total ability of a building element or building structure to lower the sound transmission through it. Two types of sound insulation might be referred to airborne sound insulation and impact sound insulation.
Examine your building elements like door, window, floor walls or any small technical element with ISO 10140-1. It contains application rules for specific elements and products, including specific requirements for the preparation and mounting of the test elements, and for the operating and test conditions.
ISO 10140-1 helps you to indicate the appropriate test procedure for elements and products. For certain types of elements/products, it contains additional and more specific instructions about quantities and test element size and about preparation, mounting and operating conditions.
ISO 10140-1 specifies rules and test requirements that enable you to measure sound insulation of building elements and products. It includes the detailed requirements for the preparation and mounting of the test elements, and for the operating and test conditions for each part of the building (e.g., floor, window, door, walls).
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 10140-1:2021 supersedes BS EN ISO 101401:2016, which is withdrawn.
