What is BS ISO 5725-3 - Intermediate precision of measurement methods about?

The BS ISO 5725 series of international standards provides a toolbox for studying the performance of standard methods of measurement and testing. BS ISO 5725-3:2023 adds ‘intermediate’ measures of precision, allowing method developers to better understand the sources of variation in measurement results within laboratories.

Who is BS ISO 5725-3 - Intermediate precision of measurement methods for?

The BS ISO 5725 series is primarily intended for use by organizations in a wide range of industrial sectors who are developing standard measurement methods for testing for compliance with specifications or regulations.

What does BS ISO 5725-3 - Intermediate precision of measurement methods cover?

This document provides:
  • a discussion of alternative experimental designs for the determination of trueness and precision measures including reproducibility, repeatability and selected measures of intermediate precision of a standards measurement method, including a review of the circumstances in which their use is necessary or beneficial, and guidance as to the interpretation and application of the resulting estimates

  • worked examples including specific designs and computations.

Why should you use BS ISO 5725-3 - Intermediate precision of measurement methods?

  • It’s standardized. The BS ISO 5725 series provides a standardized framework for assessing the precision and trueness of measurement methods. By following these guidelines, users can ensure consistency and comparability of results across different laboratories or measurement systems.

  • It’s efficient. Apart from the determination of intermediate precision measures, alternative designs aim to reduce the number of required measurements, increasing the reliability of the estimates for precision and overall mean, and considering test material heterogeneity. Also, the addition of a number of new experimental designs can reduce the costs of a precision study and/or add information on sources of variability.

  • It’s current. BS ISO 5725-3:2023 has been updated to match current international terminology and define additional terms now used in other parts of the series.

  • It helps with compliance. BS ISO 5725-3 can help demonstrate that compliance is being achieved. This in turn can help with market access.

  • It helps businesses. It can accelerate the adoption of innovation and strengthen risk management.

  • It helps individuals. BS ISO 5725-3 can help you develop your measurement expertise and improve your efficiency.

What’s new about BS ISO 5725-3:2023?

This second edition of BS ISO 5725-3 cancels and replaces the first edition (BS ISO 5725-3:1994) which has been updated and technically revised. The main changes compared with the previous edition are:

  • Several additional experimental designs have been added, some of them from BS ISO 5725-5:1994. These are orthogonal designs, split level designs, designs for heterogeneous sample material as well as designs across levels.
  • The standard is also supplemented by considerations on the selection and modelling of the experimental factors, as well as by a section in which the reliability of the various interlaboratory test parameters (mean and precision) are considered.
